deja There's a pdf tutorial. But it really is simple and the old files transfer to the new with just a few clicks
Only went to one start and just bought a few things. Then I see that my last shopping ( about 10 days ago) hasn't even been entered into inventory
I really have to get back in the groove at listing and working. Definitely spending toomuch time playing
That said, 5 are written up and going for more
Casinokat I don't know what time frame my 1/2 slips are from, so am I better off just putting them in Womens clothes rather than vintage?

grandnagus Again, main thing is how clean is it. I think that will really determine what can be got. If the spine notation isn't on the dustjacket or can be removed, it'll make a difference. If it has a couple of stamps. OK. If the FFEP or back one is missing, bummer! Is it all cocky and warpy. Don't forget to chuck out the Easton copies when determining a price. Also, the Revised 1991 (or was it 1992) that some will call a first, first.

For a number of years, DH and I used to go twice a year to the "community day" sales that were held by the Book of the Month Club warehouse which is a couple of miles from us. Then Book of the Month Club merged with Doubleday Direct which became Bookspan which owned by Bertelsmann. The twice a year community day sale was BOMC way of thanking the community...Then one fall day DH went over on the appointed day and there was a sign up - No community days. That is when I discovered that the company was under new foreign management. BeforeBertelsmann took over operations, the Book of the Month Club used to dump a lot of new books at GW at the end of the year...and then there were none. A lot of paper mills and printers in the area and new Schnibers used to also turn up with the little man stamped on the ffe.
Book of the Month Club
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Book of the Month Club (founded 1923) is a United States mail-order business where consumers are offered a new book each month.

The Book of the Month Club is part of a larger company that runs many book clubs in the United States and Canada. It was formerly the flagship club of Book-of-the-Month Club, Inc. That company merged with Doubleday Direct, Inc., a company owned by Bertelsmann, in 2000. The resulting company, Bookspan, is a joint-venture between Time Warner and Bertelsmann which controls Book of the Month Club, now sometimes known as Smart Reader Rewards, and many other book clubs.

grandnagus Well ... I do have an idea of what I'd start it at, but that's all personal and stuff. Different sellers, different styles. It's more personal than my bra size, than my age, than lots of stuff. :-)

grandnagus Then maybe it was Ender's Game that didn't match. I had the set at one time. I have no idea on starting it. Depends on how clean it is (or can be).

lludwig I've only ever seen a few blind stamps on book clubs. Probably, because I'm not usually looking. I just think it's on fewer book clubs than led to believe.

grano HAPPY BIRTHDAY to another Libra!

Dolores No. A US Doubleday will state that it is a first edition or have the date of publication only or have both first edition and a number line. However, Doubleday does publish book clubs and those will be smaller. Look for the usual signs of a book club: no price on the DJ, blind stamp on the back, cheaper paper etc.

From the Collected Works of Bookseller Hints …

BOMC [Book of the Month Club] often prints and binds wherever the original publisher printed their books. Most BOMC we do here uses the same trim size, paper, etc as the original trade pub. Often times they just tag on to a reprint of regular book (sometimes the first printing! On very popular books which makes the BCE 1st earlier than the Publisher's 2nd! And actually the same time as the 1st/1st!!). The bullet blind stamp and non-priced covers being the only difference. Same press, binding line, at the same time.

Doubleday is different, they usually redo the book down to 5-1/4" x 8", plain endpapers, inexpensive paper, less fancy DJ's (no foil stamping, embossing, etc.) They are primarily produced at their own plant or here.

thegrandnagus I can't remember which of the Ender series, but one of the books is smaller (or larger) than the rest of the set. Maybe it was Xenocide. I just remember the set didn't match size-wise.

Posted by desertprincess ( 2493 ) on Sep-25-06 at 12:19:43 PDT Listings
dolores Off the top of my head, lots of Stephen King's earlier works were printed by Doubleday. I think Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles is also Doubleday.

Plugging along....Have doubled up about 10 sets of grocery bags for future use (after emptying them) and poked them into their waiting to be used place. Put various pharmacy stuff away. Tied up full one and replaced that set and will do another when the coffee is done. Wow, It is only 1:30 ish I can still get to the dump, too.

bb-boo7-11,
Sorry to hear about your purse being stolen. I don't think the thieves would be dumb enough to hold onto it and then try to sell or pawn it. The only thing linkng them to the crime is the purse. Any thief will try to get rid of the incriminating evidence as quickly as possible. They take the cash out and dump the purse as quickly as they can. If they know a fence that they can sell the credit cards to, they will take the cards also, but that means they are carrying damning evidence around with them. I don't think these guys will do that. You stilll have to cancel your credit cards, even if the purse is found with the credit cards intact.

This sounds more like a theft of opportunity. People familiar with your habits, don't see the van and assume you are not home. They go in to get anything easily carried that they can sell. They grab the purse and are scared off by the dog. I don't think professional thieves would leve the screen door propped open. That is unusual to see at night and may call attention that something is wrong or at least not right.

If the purse doesn't turn up in a dumpster, trash can or the woods, then I would suspect neighbors although the thieves could have driven off with the purse, taken the cash and thrown the purse into a ditch. Men do not want to be seen with a woman's purse whether in a car or walking around. That would give a cop probable cause to search the purse. The thieves also wouldn't want to park their car, if they had one, close to your house where people could see them getting in and describe the car, especially carrying a woman's purse.

Jim

Good Morning. Here is a picture of a Flowering Maple plant that I have babied along for two years. It is a shrubby plant that produces maple leaf shaped green leaves and large bell-shaped blooms in mixed shades of orange, red and yellow. I had not seen one until I bought a couple. I think the flower looks a lot like a hibiscus.

bb-boo - this is a be-careful-what-you wish-for... We once spent 2 years of inconvenience (schlepping down to the Miami courthouse for various hearings) and fear (having same-name relatives get funny phone calls) after the guy who strong-armed DH with the shotgun and took his wallet (and had one manslaughter conviction already) was caught, red-handed. DH is no slouch, he got the tag number, and the guy actually fled home, where cops were waiting. Had the wallet on him, ATE the money in the squad car on the way to jail. Bottom line - much aggravation, two years later he is released on time served and charges dropped, some technicality. I know you are justifiably furious, but catching them is not necessarily any happy ending...

You can do very well in that area!

The trick is to leave time for yourself or you get burnt out.

I have a sister that is single, five kids and works graveyards.

That is who I babysit for and I honestly don't know how she does it!

It's been a blessing for me and her, but there are times that I feel like I'm in neutral. Like I'm not going any where in life.

That's why I decided to go back to school.

Hi columpro

Happy birthday grano

Thanks everyone for the tips. I don't want the purse so much or the purse but to see if there are any prints on it. I am wavering back and forth between furious and sick to my stomach. Narrowing the places they can take it to get cash. Hitting the ebay store and antique stores after lunch. Yeah I am not a mess with type willing to sit back. If I don't get it fine but not for a lack of trying.

clem Why don't you download eBay's Turbo Lister. It is also free. I use it and haven't had any problems losing anything. You can use HTML. The learning curve is pretty shallow on the old form (which I have), and although you will have to download the new form (#3), I would expect it to be just as easy to learn.

The sun is out now but still very windy. I am going to feel guilty for working inside when it is now also good for outside work. Decisions, decisions. Just finished a load of towels and need to hang them up drape on the furniture to dry.
Reattached some insulators and wire on the fence that deer, or the horses, had popped off. Got all the kids out to pasture that could go out. Now to work on something.

bb-boo - tjwalend had a good thought. Isn't there a bridge down near you? Not the big one up in town, but just beyond you house.....trying to remember. What would be the fastest way out of your area? Try to think like them and see if you might find a good dumping spot. Who knows? You might get lucky.

truthgiver -If you mean cute dog Penny in the B'day pic, she was over 15 when she died last year. I forgot to put "A Pen Mem" after the picture. She lives on through her pictures and memories.

bb-boo I remember how frustrating it was when DH lost his wallet several years ago. He was wearing a coverall with top-stitched pockets, and the bottom stitching had come loose allowing the wallet to fall through.

Fortunately, DH didn't have any checks in his wallet ... so I didn't have to worry about that. The hardest thing to replace was his driver's license. The driver's license facility required two forms of photo ID before they would reissue his license ... and of course, he had lost his identification. We finally went into the safe deposit box and pulled out his military discharge papers which had a then 30-year-old photo attached, which they accepted as ID. For a second form of ID, we used his passport which had been safely at home in my desk drawer when he lost his wallet.

Happy Birthday grano!

ok, errands run, banking done...

5 Things that Make Me Smile Today.

1.. I am still here and mostly healthy & today I reached my 67th year
2.. 4 mornings in a row to open the house for fresh air.
3.. Calls this AM early from sister, DD and friends in VA.
4.. Watching a red shouldered hawk go through my yard in his hunting expedition this AM.
5.. Have some nice home-made chicken salad waiting for lunch

bb-boo7-11: might also let credit bureaus know you were robbed in case they try and use your ID.........think you can do it online..but not sure.... What a hassle..and so frustrating.
Not surprised they didn't "dust for prints" - same happened tto my mom and DD.... police have so many "burglaries" they have gotten to the point that they don't bother...kinda not fair is it?????

Well bank accounts taken care of but I have no ID. No debit cards and two checks. More checks will not come for 1 to two weeks. Ditto debit cards. I can't get to the drivers license until tomorrow cause they are not open mondays. Will have to ask DH for shipping money cause he still has his debit card as they just transfered it to the new account.

Off to the po to mail my 4 packages then half a dungeness crab is waiting for me for lunch. I need to spoil myself today. I buy them from the grocery store and only eat half so I have a half waiting.

sorry to hear about your misfortune bb-boo, that really stinks. Here's hoping the crime is resolved somehow.
On a similar note, I'm having trouble convincing my downstairs’ neighbors to keep the door locked. I have told them repeatedly, and the landlord has also talked to them. There are four young adults in the apartment. I suppose that they think they are doing themselves a favor so they don't have to take the trouble with keys. Of course, if I talk to one of them, they deny it, because there are three others that probably "did it". Very frustrating.

Sunshine and clear skies in the Fla Panhandle. I'm in a good mood, but some in this house are not. Sis has two dr apts today - I forgot the earlier one, so had to just drop her off - and will go back to get her. Second is after lunch. Also trip to PO planned.

Don't expect to get much done, but may take some photos for listing tonight.

Warm and healing thoughts for those who need them.

Good morning from usual beautiful SoFla...

My five smiles:

Good bids coming for photo books
Nine red roses on counter from my two bushes
DS coming for a visit in November
Patio screen guys due for more measurements
Label on meat dept item I saw yesterday... "Chicken Paws"

Lots work to do today, love it that way... you guys have a good week

Casino... cut and paste is control x, then paste... c is just copy ... but by now you have figured that out

Good morning to all from Dupo, Illinois where it is cool but the sun is shining.

Later this morning I take Miss Kitty to the vet for her annual vaccinations. Four of my five cats have vaccinations due in September, and this will finish them up. I plan to take Bessie along with us to the clinic to get a weight on her. Today is heartworm pill day, and since the dosage is determined by weight, I like to check this every so often. Bessie's weight usually runs real close to the mark where dosages change.

clementine I still use eBay's SYI form for listing and will continue to use the old form for as long as I can. I remember when the now "old form" was first introduced, and I hated it. However, after working with it for a while, I became comfortable with the form and I suppose this will happen with the latest version as well.

Hi all Cancelled paypal account and waiting for them on phone now. Waiting till a tad after 9 to go to bank since I am going in with no id. DH is calling them before I go in with questions etc to alert them it is really me.

I am so mad kearsargebooks the cops didn't dust cause family has been in and out but the only one who touched the screen door thing that you use to prop it open was Andy. Course if they grabbed it by the sides I guess dusting would do no good. I am going to be checking pawn shops in the area since it is more likely they would try and pawn the purse than toss it in the dumpsters. But yes I will check dumpsters anyway. I feel for you I had a 40s sheared beaver coat go bidless last night at 45 dollars.

No keys in purse thankfully oceana

I feel sick.

Good Morning from cool, dry, sunny So.NH.

mainelady I listed a NYYankees jacket & hat yesterday - probably Vintage, at a low start & low BIN. It sold within 4 hours for $45 BIN. It is also one of the auctions where I am doing a % for DD's theater company, so I won't net much, but nice to see the sale! Trying to list low & move stuff.

baltimore So you could help me with clues as you get yours a week before me Huh?
I didn't do well with the Sunday puzzle but I usually don't. I can't imagine I got any that you wouldn't but you can ask. The daily puzzles I do after dinner while I'm drinking my coffee.

wellington Nice pictures. Seems as though it was a lovely wedding despite the fog & rain. We have a Wellington Rd. here - the major, rather long street in what was once the "outskirts" of the City. Now, it is where there is a lot of new homes & condos.

Have to call ISP to see if I can retrieve my new password for my email on our major account.

Good to see Expctmrcle pop in. LOL... ( RE; discovered attic space!).

Bkwrm.. yes... lovely sunrise !
Btw... nice going on those books!( didnt look at all, to see if you owe me a loan, hehhe).
How strange.. Sat night , off the beaten path store open. Do you keep notes when you stumble across these places, in case you head that way again?

Yesterdays exercise.... I had a bag of packing peanuts out for freecycling. The handles were tied but just the slightest opening remained. Guess the wind was just enough to suck some penuts out. So... I had quite of few peanuts to pick up !!

Wellington.,.... hope your mom is doing well.
Thanks for sharing the wedding pics. I enjoyed seeing them.

aegbooks.. thanks for the tree/ sunrise.

Grano... my word!! ( ' friend',,, turning away from you. and in church yet.)Thanks for the book of days.. btw.

Good Morning Clear blue skies this morning with a projected high in the low 80s, but thinking about putting the electric blanket on the bed for cool nighttime temps.

Five things that make me smile:
1. Sunday dinner with four generations of family at the long table.
2. The Whole Enchalada Fiesta with it's 10 foot across enchalada.
3. The annual Southern New Mexico State Fair & Rodeo opens this week.
4. Nice weekend sales, all books, clearing shelf space.
5. The love and care shared by bookboarders for their various animal friends.

Today promises to be a full and productive day. So time to put on my lace-up shoes and start moving. Enjoy your day!!!

Morning! Overcast here, OK downright what some would call gloomy and it is blowing quite a bit. I call it a great day to work inside.
I have so much to do I think I am stalling, as I am not sure what to do first. I know I just need to kick myself and just do one thing to start. I think I will go feed a bit early and see about chosing a starting place.
After the leg break last year where nothing got done and then all the new stuff brought in this year AND pile that onto the last winter when Penny was sick, I am behind by a few years. LOL No wonder I have no place to move anything to, to sort or straighten.
Boy, in rereading that the three days lost last week seem like nothing. I best get moving.

joy-baby - You may have just hit the nail on the head and answered your own question about why your friend cut you off so abruptly.
If her husband is, as she told you in your Sep-25-06 at 05:36:21 PDT , "nice to the whole world, except me and the kids", it sounds like he may be abusive.
He may have ordered her to not have contact, or threatened her or..... That kind of guy wants to cut off all outside support, from their families. They want control.

clementine - Can you highlight the description in the sell box? If so Try doing that then right click.....I know you said you can not see the copy choice box......But if you can do the first part...........Highlight and then right click, then push control and the letter "c" , and then go to the place you want to paste and do the normal left click to chose the pasting place and THEN use the control button plus the letter "v". See if that will do the copy /paste for you.

Other wise could you write your description in another place and then PASTE it INTO the sell thing? Will it let you paste INTO it?

Aegbooks - Actually we liked the doc in the ER, just did not want to be staying IN that hospital. with other docs. Not the best reputaion for overall care.
The ER doc was one of the contract Docs and just happened to be there that day. He was VERY good but he was not the norm. We were lucky.

grano, bookdelle, lludwig, aeg Thank you for your nice comments on the wedding pics. Bookdelle I remember the 'down to earthiness' of your DD's ceremony. grano hope those feet feel better today.

Oh...another interesting sight when DH & I were out on Saturday:

We were coming home in the dark along a 2-lane highway (taking the back way home) and were still about 2.5 hours away when we happened upon the town of Wyeville, population 146 (or so the sign said!) Imagine our surprise, as we drove down this dark road, to see a building with a sign that said "Desperado Antiques" and "OPEN"! The lights were on in that shop, calling to me like a beacon...DH stopped and we browsed. Two other couples also stopped in while we were there...past 7pm on a Saturday night on a lonely, rather rural highway. Just goes to show "if you are open, they will come". (I bought one Catholic book, btw.)

joy-baby, aegbooks, mainelady Thanks! We do get some amazing views here; it was one of the main selling points of the house.

I wish I had my camera with me this weekend when DH and I were out and about. There was this huge hairy dog on a heavy chain laying on the hood of an old rusted-out car next to a dilapidated shed--the leaves were falling and piling up around the car....would have been a great photo.

Time to pack up lots of Catholic books for the PO now...

hello all, clear skies here today in MN mainelady, and i continue to love your weather reports!! hopefully, we will have sun today, too, it makes me feel so much better and now another sinus infection!! but, at least i slept some better last night...

again, thanks to you all for your advice. i have let my friend "go," as it were, and maybe things will work out in the future, maybe not. i continue to try and see what can be better with me, that's the only person i can change.

i, too, wonder, as some of you said, if there is another man involved. she is unhappily married. i like her husband, although he is rather cold, and she told me once "nice to the whole world, except me and the kids," so that is a sad thing but, again, someone else's marriage. i pray for her and i've started reading my Bible again. something that i have neglected and it is helping me overall.....

anyway...i guess it's one of those things in life that can't be helped. if i could change things, i would still have my Mama with me....

so....

our goofy scanner is freaking out and i need to make some pictures, hope my husband can look at it today....he is so busy i almost need an appt. with him.....

grano, we have Perkins up here in Flyover Land. i think they make the best cheese and mushroom omletes in the universe......i get those whenever i am able to eat out, not often....

you mentioned "Fall of Eagles," and how good it was....European history, esp. royal history, is my great passion and yes, you are right, they were all related by marriage, etc. Nicholas II's wife, Alexandra (some think she and Rasputin almost alone brought down the 300-yr old dynasty...) was the cousin of Kaiser Wilhelm II, in fact the Kaiser had fallen in love with her older sister and wanted to marry her, but she had more sense than to accept him. They say he kept a picture of her on his bedside table the rest of his life, sure his wife loved that one.....and, that he tried to rescue her from the Bolsheviks but was, of course, unsuccessful....i haven't seen The Fall of Eagles in so long!!

oh, Johnny Depp, of course have to mention him. he sure makes one's heart hurry.....i didn't like the second "Pirates" movie as well as the first, but finally saw it Saturday with my DD and her little girlfriend and thought it was still quite good......i think they have already made #3 and #4...might as well ride it out as long as you can, huh!!!

love you all..hope your day goes well, wherever you be!!

i gotta run and take out Puppy!!

Good morning from Maine, where it's supposed to be mostly sunny and in the 60s today. Need to do some errands this afternoon and am playing cards tonight, so this morning I need to get busy and write up some listings and package a few things to mail.
Last night I listed the video set I bought Saturday and it sold within 4 hours on a BIN and has already been paid for-my kind of transaction! Have had more interest in my listings the past few days so hopefully things are picking up-could be just that I'm listing stuff more people are interested in of course.
bb-boo What a distressing experience! Glad they left without doing anything more, but really tough to deal with losing your purse and cancelling things and replacing what was taken, etc.

I hit the edit listing tab, too...not the back button. I took their stupid survey a couple weeks ago and pleaded with them to fix it so that we can highlight the description, copy and paste it (I copy it into a letter and send to myself just to be sure I don't lose it) somewhere. You'll notice when you right click that option isn't there anymore. Grrrrrrr

Hello Everyone,
Life is so funny. I have been getting things in my life set and ready to eBay for several months. As soon as I put everything into motion, my other business had an increase in hours worked plus that good old “get ready” time added up and shot another eBay day for me. I have been trying to get up 10 a day but so far, I am lucky to get up 14 or 15 a week. I have to work a few hours tomorrow and then with packaging and shipping I am shooting for a couple more listings tomorrow.
I want to begin to sell some of the stamps too but I am afraid I don’t know as much as I thought I did. I have run across a few cancellations that I think the Stampies on the board would enjoy seeing pictures of a few of them. I know there are some goodies in the mix along with some things that I will work into pieces of my artwork. I have a collection of love letters from a guy From WWII that would be cool to use in an alter book, along with some old military photos and postcards.
The silhouettes are still doing well and I have had a couple of surprises but for the most part eBay is bring me some back some focus in my life. I am surely getting organized. One really cool thing that I discovered last week was that my attic is really huge and I can use it to store some of the boxes I don’t have room for in the house or garage. There is a real wooden floor in it. I doubt the attic has ever been cleaned so I need to take the outdoor vacuum up there and give it a good once or twice over. I need to get some good lighting and a better ladder too. Mom had a lot of stuff and it is tuff to go through it daily when there is no place to put it. I may have to have another estate sale.
Well, that is about all I can think of to share tonight. Thank you for your support. It is a good thing to be able to report in here.

There was this farmer walking to his mailbox one day, and he noticed a white hearse coming up the road, and behind the hearse was a man walking with a brown goat, and behind them followed about 20 people.
The next day, the farmer was going after his mail again, and he looked up and saw the same hearse, the same man, the same goat, and about 75 people walking behind the hearse. The farmer's curiosity got the best of him. So he walked up to the man with the goat and asked, "I saw you yesterday about the same time as today, do you mind telling me what's happening?"
The man behind the hearse explained that his wife died, and the farmer said "Oh I'm so sorry! What happened?"

The man with the goat replied that the goat had killed her.

The farmer said, "If you buried your wife yesterday, who's in the hearse today? The man with the goat replied, "My mother-in-law." The farmer thought a minute and asked the man with the goat, "Can I borrow your goat?" and he replied, "You'll have to get in line with the rest of these people."

The Gazebo

Leaf Girls and Jr,Bridesmaid
Yes, if anyone wonders, I think the two girls are barefoot.

The Bride and her Dad

The bouquet hand off, as the grrom waits

The RAIN came
The groom now only in vest, had given the bride his jacket. How sweet is that. On the right are my two older sisters. NC one in front, Mom of bride taking picks of the rain run, and I had just gotten my umbrella (free from side of road this spring) over Mom.

Grab a chair, or two or three and RUN...OK walk quickly

Wedding in the round
The pottery chalice is for a water ceremony. They both have interest in Native American culture and the water drunk from the vessel united them as one.

The whole motley crew ( another Daddy expression)
Bride's immediate family and her Mom's family.
From L to R. Bride's sister (my Illinois niece) kids belong to Her. Her DH had the flu and wasn't at the wedding. Bride's Dad, Bride's Mom (my 'here' sister), New DH, Herself, Her brother, My Mom (her Grama) Me, My NC sister

Bride's boss and great doctor in middle

Happy couple

Some shenanigans
The Great Pumkin came early.

A little nose job
A bit of reception-rhinoplasty . Being egged on by the Groom. The wearer said it was VERY heavy. LOL

And then....I ran out of Memory.

bb-boo Scary & what a mess for you!

and employers do not pay for extended education as much as in former times
My first job when I moved to NH in late 1973 was part-time at a Sear's Credit Center (no longer in NH). NH wages were quite low at that time compare to rest of nation. When hired (with a BA + grad work in Library Sci. which I left off any application), I was told that Sears paid extra for college grads but they asked me not to mention a higher salary to anyone. Okay. Others were making 75cents/hr & I was given 90cents/hr !!! Even in 1973, that was pathetic! The BA really paid off in that situation :-)
My next job in NH in early '74, was as an assistant in the Tech Dept. of Raytheon. I typed the Coast Guard manuals or revisions for print ready copy. I didn't get that job because of a BA but because I could type & because I was recently from San Francisco. Unknown to me, many in the dept. had recently been transferred from S.F. to Manchester, NH. That full-time job paid $98/week and I worked on one of the first "word processors" - the IBM MagCard!! The most useful skill I ever learned (high school) was how to type.

I've told my calculus story before - the short version is that I did not take Advanced Algebra in H.S.(4th yr. math) and the first required math course at my college was Calculus. First we did a "review" of Advanced Algebra and .... I was so lost!

Well, I got a few items listed today. Let's see if I can do a few more before lights out, here.

bb-boo Scary allright. Now for the down right frustrating part of canceling everything. Glad Blaze was there.

celmentine - Not sure but think arthritis can be from bony growths. The steroid should help pain, but not the cause, I think.

mamapuppy - I, too, am LOLing at your counting the goats. Cool on the Kia.

lludwig - I will work on more pics now that I can do the name the link thing. Glad you enjoyed. Oh and I loved the Chinese proverb. And, I had forgotten till I read some one elses post. I did read about LLB's card to you. Very nice and the leaving it in the car trick........ that way he didn't have to have you get all gushy with him.

grano - Most Perkins resaurants are very good but I have been in a bad one. Boy, when you have been in a bad one you kind of shy away from them. Had the bad one been the first I certainly would have. But as it was I only did not go to that one again.

bb-boo so glad you have the scary-to-a-stranger, magnificent Blaze,--hope you get thru it with no ID theft. ((hugs))

grano Perkins is a franchise I think, so a lot of quality probably depends on the individual owners. Here they do an excellent job. They do have salads, and fruit plates I think, and "heart healthy" meals, but we splurged today :) WOW those are gorgeous Moran pictures, thanks for posting that site, I Really enjoyed it! It must have been great, seeing those fab pictures and hearing the story behind them.

wellington so glad you found a more helpful Dr. and hospital for Mom and were both reasured about her health. A complicated series of events, but what a lovely congenial outcome there was, thanks for sharing. The strewing leaves sounds like a great and inexpensive fall touch. It sounds like everyone had fun celebrating and family closeness was enhanced :)

joybaby won't add to it , but second the good advice others have given.Glad your auctions have picked up some for you. I saw the first Pirates movie last night, and found it very entertaining, and Depp was so eccentrically funny I laughed out loud. .

DFIL made standing ribroast on the grill, mmmmmmm!

jhowe It is possible to eat more healthily at Perkins ...But :) not this time

I don't know how parents manage the enormous costs of college these days, and as mentioned, aid is harder to get, and employers do not pay for extended education as much as in former times. My hat is off to them.

jhill good to hear you like your new home and are getting settled a bit. Are the kitties weirded out?

mamapuppy lol and good for you for doing a nose count on the goats, congrats on new vehicle, hope it will be a good one.

Baltimoreandmore, thanks. The elf books do seem to have numbers on the last page. The one I am looking at now has C8 6-55 on one side and 40-80 on the other. As the copyright is 1955 I assume the 6-55 means June 1955. I have no idea what the other numbers mean. The Wonder books have no numbers that I can see. Wish they were as easy to date as Little Golden Books.
Time to take a break and watch the Patriots play. DS's highschool won this weekend , as did UCONN (DD's school) so if the Patriots win it will be a good football weekend for us...lol.

Hi, guys! I was gonna post a lot, but I'm too tired now after reading welly's post! Yikes, bb-boo! Hope you didn't lose much cash.

joy-baby There's an old saying: "let go and let God". Think good thoughts about, um, lemmee see...who's that pirate actor?

ROFLOL at mamapuppy counting goats!!! Good going on the KIA, too. I think my "guy" at the Ford place has located a vehicle for me....a 1998 Chevy Blazer (6 cyl) with 72,000 on it. Not bad at all, out here, where people really rack up the miles in a hurry. The only drawback to wide open spaces. Of course, DH went into some site that lists every recall ever issued on particular vehicles, and doesn't like the high number on that model....says a Ford Explorer is a better car. Jeez. I'll know more Monday, maybe. They're going to inject steroids into DH's neck between c3-4, I think it is, on Oct 2nd. Dr. says it will help immensely. Apparently it's arthritis (aren't bone spurs similar)? His x-rays sure looked like there were little growths on some of the bones. They're calcium deposits. Heck, I dunno. We had two days of rain here....thank God. I didn't like driving in it Friday night, but was grateful that the trees and plants were getting a much needed drink. Speaking of a much-needed drink... naw. Tempting, but naw.

That reminds me that when I took Environmental Psychology we reviewed what was then then major report on factors which contribute to and things that deter home break-ins. The report looked at the presence of lighted walkways, trees with low limbs, bushes which obscured a view of the font door, the presence of security system stickers (This home is protected by...), etc. The only think the researchers forget to include was the presence of a dog. To the best that I can remember most police departments at that time considered the presence of a dog to be the #1 deterant.

Joybaby - there are a variety of reasons why a person can do what has been happening to you. Two come immediately to mind as what happened to me. One was a very dear friend who started having an affair while married, and talked to me alot about it and the problems with her marriage. Then something changed and the affair ended, and she was trying to work things out with her husband, and no longer wanted to be friends with me I think because "I knew too much" and perhaps she was afraid that I would slip and say something. And one that has happened to many of us, I am sure, woman friend meets a new man and is "in love" and suddenly has no time for her girl friends anymore wanting to spend all their time and energy on the new man. So there can be many reasons unrelated to us or what we may have or not done.

Sounds busy wellington

Well this morning Andy woke up and told me the back screen door was propped open with the little metal thing and the back door was wide open. I thought mabye I hit it by accident coming in and it was nothing. Blaze was still inside like a good girl. Well went to go to store no purse. Tossed the house upside down. Went every where I was yesterday no purse wallet or anything. I am waiting for the police now to file a report. The only thing I can think of is with the big van gone they thought we weren't home but when they came in they grabbed the purse off the counter then Blaze spooked them since they didn't bother unpropping the door.

There's a Perkins Pancake House about 15 miles from us in Wappingers Falls. They have the VERY BEST Eggs Benedict. Who used to have the slogan - Worth a trip from any place? That's Perkins.

A long day of shuffling boxes up and down stairs, putting up curtains, etc. Slowly getting things together, maybe we will be able to get the car in the garage before the snow flies. The builder generously left some of the extra carpet and some roof shingles and even some siding, but it all takes up room, and hopefully we will never need it anyway. We like the house, though, and find it quite comfortable for two old fogies.
Now to soothe the aching bones in a hot shower, have a bite to eat and watch a little TV before an early bedtime.

ohhh joybaby I just realized that if you want to eventually land a job in an office that you will need "business clothes" and that will involve a cash outlay so taking a job in a retail store for awhile would be a step in getting those "business clothes". Plus I think that some retail stores hire high school and college kids who generally want the evening hours and you would want the hours when your kids are in school.

Scroll alert. Family stuff and wedding ahead.

My niece got married yesterday, here on the Island, but earlier in the week I had to take my Mom to the ER and was gone for three days. Kind of like a three ring circus. But 'all's well that ends well', to borrow from Shakespeare.

Mom who had been on antibiotics for bronchitis for 6 days woke up with some bleeding. The doc here thought she might have pneumonia and wanted her to get a chest x-ray and check her blood count. This almost 91 year old, is a woman who is almost never sick and has virtually no health issues (I hope I have her genes) but does get stressed out over unknown stuff.
She phoned me at 8:20 AM on Tuesday. I found someone to feed the horses, packed food for Teddy and needed stuff for me and we were on the 10AM boat Tuesday.
We sat in the one ER for 5 hours. They did not even take blood for about 3 hours and did not do the X-ray till about the 4th hour. They wanted her to be admitted for a couple of tests but we do not want to be in that hospital so I drove her to Green Bay. She actually felt fine. I think she had to sign a thing cause I drove her. They wanted her to go by ambulance.
Thank heavens my GB niece ( the one who got married) is a medical assistant. Her doctor took Mom on, sight unseen, as a patient and when we got there, the GB niece met us and Mom went straight to a room. The doctor was there within an hour. A super doctor ( why can't they all be like him) and he set up test with gastro-enterologist for the next day. The whole time Mom is worried that she is putting a damper on Robin's wedding.

Previous to all this, I had made a dentist appointment for Thursday AM in Illinois. Plan had been to go down Wednesday PM and back Thursday. I told Mom I would cancel if need be, no problem. In the meantime my oldest sister was coming in from NC on Tuesday, by train, to my other niece's home, west of Chicago, and getting a ride up with her.

Plan one
Chicago contigent including niece, and two small children (all of whom were sick with a bug bought home from pre-school) and my sister from NC, would ........
A. Drive up to ferry if there was time to catch a boat after Mom was released.
Or
B1. Stay at getting married niece's apartment on Wed. and night pick up Mom in the AM after she was released and drive to Ferry. getting married niece would not be there as she was leaving first thing Wednesday to go to Island.
Or
B2. Every one would stay at getting married niece's apartment, Mom included, if she were released too late to catch boat.
Or
C. Go straight to the boat Wednesday and I would cancel dentist and stay with Mom.
Or
D. I would go to dentist in Illinois, NC sister would get dropped at hospital and stay with Mom. Then, I would pick both of them up on Thursday on my way back to the Island.

Thank Heavens for CELL PHONES!

We went with plan "D". I stayed with Mom till she had finished dringing that horrid stuff 'Golitely' (spelling?) and left just before she went up for the test. It was not scheduled till 2 PM Wed. Sister from NC arrived about 15 minutes before Mom got back to her room. Yes, a real three ring circus, as my Dad used to say. Thankfully, Mom's test showed nothing drastic and hopefully she now has piece of mind.

Picked Mom and sister up and got home 5 PM Thursday. We went to a "meet and greet" of groom's family at my sister's house, the sister who lives here and is Mom of the bride. My NC sister drove Mom over and Mom stayed about 45 minutes. She felt OK but was tired after the three days off Island. She drove herself home before dark. I took my NC sister home later.
Friday there was a perch fry and by then many of the 'away' friends had arrived. More talk and more meet and greet. Saturday was wedding day.

The wedding was wonderful!
Decorations of fall leaves, gourds, pumkins and even small trees. The flower girls dropped leaves in front to the bride. Basic fall colors with splashes of pink and brown predominated.
Casual and relaxed with clothing of guests ranging from daytime dressy, suits both with and without ties, to shorts and fancy T'shirts. For the bride and groom (both very down to earth) the day was about family and friends sharing in their day. Not about status.

We even got to hear the vows twice. It was an outdoor wedding. Bride and groom in a gazebo, guests in the open. It started to rain. Bride turned around and said "everyone move to the tent" They had a contingency plan. Every one grabbed chairs and walked back to the tent. Bride and groom ended up in the middle of the tent. The minister said well "we are now doing wedding in the round". They did the vows again for the people who did not hear the first time when the rain started. All have a good sense of humor and took it in stride.
Groom is wonderful, as are his family and friends. No primadonas, no obnoxious drunks. I met lots of nice people with an eclectic assortment of jobs. After the short rain with the bad timing, the sun came out and stayed out most of the afternoon.
My niece and new nephew dated many years ago (about 15) but he got too serious too fast, for my niece, at the time. They got back together about 5 years ago. They are a wonderful match.

Evening plans were for a bonfire on the beach at on of the resorts. The fire was started before the rain came again, and continued to burn throughout the deluge. We got aver three inches of rain last night.
Fortunately every one staying at the lodge, where the bonfire was, was here for the wedding so there were many inside places to be. More food here brats and dogs and brownies and chips and and oh yeah more beer. I forgot to mention the beer. Between the reception and the bonfire I think they said 16 cases of regular beer bit the dust and 4 plus cases of the new wheat beer from the Island wheat made by Capitol Brewery in Madison..
I ended up staying till almost 1AM. Pretty late for me but had a great time. And not a drop to drink. I am allergic to beer.....and they didn't have any rum, besides I was driving.

Scroll alert. Family stuff and wedding ahead.

Ok stamphick that is what I thought you meant by social sciences. Don't know why I blank on it. Must have been thinking social studies.

electric-effects re: anybody who thinks sending a child to college is within the average person's yearly income is sadly mistaken. You can say that again!

you guys are all the best! yes, i have been looking for a part time job, in fact had an interview Friday, but their "part time" definition was 39 hours a week! i just can't do that, with the stuff i have to do at home and my children's schedules, but i am going to keep looking. i think God has His hand in this and there will be something for me, to help with finances and to help with the way i feel about myself....

as for my friend, i am letting it all go, as most of you suggested. i really am. in fact, i let it go today, and guess that sounds crazy. i just "gave her to God" and i really do wish her the best, that doesn't mean i won't cry from time to time missing her....but....

so, as always, thank you my friends.....

off to fix supper............

They had a HS math teacher & other teachers who did the latter and now find that college profs do the first two.

stamphick! Well I will let Swifty continue to think that it was 20. Then when I say, "remember that guy..." LOL In fact when he was "deriding" liberal arts degrees, I immediately shot back, "hey. Ellen graduated from a small liberal arts college, he shut up. He takes note when I say things like remember meeting bookdelle or mainelady well they said... lol my secret way of getting across points without it being "listen to your mother or father." Well as I told ya before the HS teacher they had took for AP calculus had them into Caluclus 3 by the end of the year and he did score a 5 on the AP exam and he said it is not that he doesn't understand the work, it is having to do a 2-step all the time. Starts out doing it the way he was taught and then has to stop and "erase" that from his mind and start again with the way this prof wants it done. Swifty concurred with the fact that what is different is that their HS teacher had them work stuff on their own and then had a student put it on the board vs the prof working the problem himself and then assigning homework. The HS teacher they had is one that all the kids found to be a demanding teacher who prepared them well. Oh and LLB in response to swifty's question said that he is not alone in having a rough go of it. The prof told the class not to worry about quiz grades.

As far as social science majors and business not talking it. Don't forget this is a college that is ranked as one of the best in nation for preparing students for med students and that is what a lot of kids in his class are - not med students, but students who are plan on going to med school. His friend for HS is also in the class and is encountering the same thing - a curve ball has been tossed at them and they need to rejust for this profs expectations. Funny thing is I had dreaded taking Calculus in HS but found out that I enjoyed it. We had the half year trig and half year calculus for our senior year.

He is really enjoying his Chem class and esp the 3 hour lab, and the chem prof is his favorite. He said that when he was buying the textbook, the student working there said, Is this for Prof X course? and when he said yes, the student said, you got the hardest chem prof on campus. Do well there and you'll do fine with the rest of your chem classes.

Yes times have changed with employers paying for advanced degrees. That is really nice that not only were they paid for but that it was done on "work time" too! We have told Swifty a number of times that if he wants to continue right away and get his masters that now would be the best time for us to help him. However, he has always been a "hands-on" and charting his own course, plus he topped it off with "do you want me to show you the Wall Street Journal article where employers are complaining about kids with MBAs who have no practical experience. He is much more attuned to the changing economy and job expectations so...also now with distance learning and on-line courses...he already filled me in on how many courses he could take that way and then how much time he would have to be Penn State Main to finish a masters. Right now I think he has a very worthy goal set for himself with the CFA and like the CPA, work experience is part of it.

mainelady Speaking of which, I forgot to answer your question. From what I understand the CFA exam is in 3 parts and given in 3 parts. Each part takes approx 6 hours.

joybaby Thank you for the "sweet" birthday greeting. I appreciated it. I think mainelady gave you some excellent advice. A part time job might be the answer to several things - both in easing the finances and in meeting new people. Who knows that new friend might just be waiting for you to walk in the door.

And don't fret that you can't get a job that your feel that you should be able to re: journalism degree. Take any job just to get back into the workforce and out among new people. Right now you could focus on dusting off the resume and reading the want-ads, and I think someone else mentioned contacting Temp agencies. Excellent idea on seeing what is out there. Don't look back as much as look forward with what type of things do you like now or what might serve as a dual benefit - by the latter I mean that maybe until you find what you really want, a job in a grocery store or a drug store is going to get you not only an income but also discount on food etc. Or maybe as a clerk in a clothing store - discount on clothes for you and the kids. Those may not be the jobs you want to stay with in 6 months or a year but they might be the foot in the water that is needed for now.

afternoon all........had a lovely day....11 AM mass and then to the FOL Annual Mtg/Luncheon....was a very nice affair with a big crowd.... and new officers installed...and I got rid of the recording secretary job...one year was enough..I'd just rather do my table/pricing/sorting..don't want to be a "chief"...would rather be a peon/worker bee.

Had an excellent program guest... a gentleman who used to be on the staff of our local paper, but as he says is now
"self-imposed unemployed" in order to do nature photography full-time.... his name is JOHN MORAN - and he gave a great slide show of his work with a running dialog of when/where the pics were taken. Enjoyed it very much.
I have a signed copy of his "Journal of Light" and also a signed printeof his great pic of Haley's Comet - I like his work very much...

anyway...a good day all around........... Off to catch up on the news in here..............

Hello all!
Stopped in hoping to find info on the Red Post about how to tell first editions of Wonder Books and Elf Books but so far no luck...anybody know off the top of their heads? Thanks!
Just scrolled and saw college topic. My oldest DD who just turned 22 has lived on her own since she was 18, her choice. We paid for her community college tuition and she worked 30 hours a week to support herself in addition to her classes. Now she is going to go to an out-of-state 4 year college in January to get her BS. Even though she has been on her own all these years and she is over 21, when filling out the FAFSA she is still considered our dependent which really puts her at a disadvantage for Financial Aid because a large % of what she earned last year and used to support herself is counted like she saved it for college. ~ I will have 3 in college next year.... anybody who thinks sending a child to college is within the average person's yearly income is sadly mistaken. This year I have 1 in college and even with her scholarships the tuition bill is shocking and it goes up each time. Aghhhhhh!

hmmm... got waylaid for a bit looking up the lyrics to Iko Iko and checking out sock yarn. A brief thought on Calculus; the easiest part that I recall from my two quarters were the "max-min" problems, which involved figuring out what combination of purses and neckties (for example) one could cut from a given amount of fabric to maximize the profit, numbers, etc.... All the rest was science/engineering oriented and not overly easy. I suppose that such max-min problems would be a part of some types of engineering....

really off to do.....have a great day all....!

lludwig...Actually I was 21 when I got my masters, I got my BS at 20. As delores pointed out it was common back in my time for companies to pay for graduate work for science and engineering majors. I doubt it is so common toady. IBM in particular hired new graduates and their only job their first year was to obtain an advanced degree. I took graduate courses at both UW and UCLA that were paid for by employers and took paid time from work to do it.

I don't know when dolores graduated but when I was at OSU we had the first woman engineering student ever at that institution. Now OSU ranks 5th in the nation of engineering schools with women faculty.

I don't remember many social science or business people taking calculus back in my day but I guess it is fairly common now. I'm not sure why. I guess I associate Newton more with calculus because of his association to mathematical physics which was of interest to me.

I'm pretty sure nobody I knew in college got food stamps since I don't think they were around then.

I had both messy and neat daughters which sometimes caused a problem. My youngest, the only one left at home, is a combination. Here school work is neat as a pin and carefully organized. She can come up with a paper she wrote 2 years ago in a couple minutes. Her room, on the other hand, is an ecological disaster. My wife hired a very part time housekeeper who sneaked in and cleaned in the daughter's room and that caused a big fuss so I guess the housekeeper is forevermore barred from that part of the house. She is also barred from my stamp area. I didn't think of this before the housekeeper was hired but I guess now if the President wants to appoint me to any post requiring senate confirmation I will have to decline. Another career option closed forever.

Hello to all from Dupo, Illinois where the sun has finally broken through. Up until now, it has been a very gray, dreary day ... actually, not a bad time to list books.

mamapuppy I know what you mean about messy dogs. Bessie is a very messy eater and drinker ... and I routinely have to pick up chunks of dry dog food that have escaped her big jaws. I put a thick towel under the water dish to absorb the water that slops over the sides when Bessie drinks.

Greetings all;

gorgeous day here, after a day of Autumnish atmosphere yesterday....

aegbooks,bkwrm40 ah, I used to have granny omelets at Perkins....Yummmm...

D SigOth just finished reading A World Lit Only by Fire and I just finished a brand new poker book, one so interesting and different and fun that I don't even want to enter it's name into any poker buzz. I'll merely say tha it's from a secondary poker publisher.....very very entertaining and I hope, useful.... :D I've just started Of Moths and Men but need to give priority to other tasks first....I picked up The Ladies No.1 Detective Agency for D SigOth, since he really enjoyed The Kalahari Men's Typing School. And when I can find these neat books for $.150 each, it's kinda a no brainer...(Well the poker book was new, and "lit by fire" from the library however....

lludwig Belated Happy Birthday! Sounds like a fun time....

I dont' know much about welfare for college students, but do know that some creative "investing" was done by students in the 80's with Pell grants, etc.... Or so I was told...

stamphick I picked up a copy of The World is Flat at my local thrift, sans DJ, for $1.50, but it's in the big stack of "to-reads". Glad to hear it's good.

joy-baby I agree with the advice you've been given. It's also possible that she's going through some issues or challenges of her own, and doesn't have the spare energy to
talk out the relationship with you....I'd just consider it an ebb and flow kind of thing....Put it on a back shelf of things to think about, would be my advice. Perhaps you could take up knitting or quilting and join a knitting or quilting circle!! Just a thought....:D

Off to do the stuff....

Hi Everyone.

mainelady I just read your reply, I had this typed out, so I'm repeating the same advice, LOL.

joy-baby As hard as it is, I'd just let it go. You've let her know how you feel, there's nothing more you can do, really. For whatever reason, she can't or doesn't want to talk about it right now.

I know you've been pondering a part-time job, maybe it would be good to dive into something new. I started off with a temp service, and I know a few others here have, too. You could ask for just one day assignments, to get your "feet wet" and see if it will work for you. If not, maybe go back to a hobby you enjoyed, something to take your mind off things.

joy-baby Whatever the reason, she has made it clear that she doesn't want to continue or resume your friendship. She would have repied to your letter or spoken to you when you saw her if that were not the case. I think for both your sakes that the best thing you can do is drop it now. It's hard to lose someone you care for and not know why, but that does happen in life and we have to pick up the pieces and go on. Seems like it's time to do just that in this situation. Not easy, but sometimes it's the only thing you can do.

dolores1953 t'was a different time then... Back when I went to college, a lot of kids did try to get food stamps and would be rejected, even the kids who no longer had anything to do with their parents. Re: loans. Does it make a difference if the parent buys the car or pays for the travel and uses the loan to pay for college? Loans are loans - yes, the interest rate on a student loan is delayed and/or lower, but it gets paid back and at a much higher rate than it once was when it was not uncommon for some college students to default on the loan and/or declare bankruptcy. Because of how often that was happening, a lot of things have changed. I think similar to how a deadbeat dad's wages are attached for child support the same thing now happens with students who don't ante up and take responsibility.

My oldest hopes that he find a job with an employer who will pay for him to continue his education, but like a lot of benefits such as health benefits, many employers have cut or reduced educational benefits. Even back when I was first out of college, the school district I worked for only started paying for graduate credits after the first 12 were completed. 'tis the way it goes - like bookdelle the amount I made teaching was at poverty level or close to it.

That is too bad that the prof discourged you from becoming a math teacher. Easy or hard, I think it is more important for a teacher to enjoy what he is teaching and to be able to get it across to his students. Doesn't matter imo if the teacher finds the subject easy, as long as he understands that not every student is going to find it as easy as he or she did.

LLUDVIG. You didn't know anyone at college that was eligible for food stamps. I don't think anyone would brag about it. At that time, my son got a letter from the federal government. I saw the letter.

Student loans are great for those that really need help, but I know of students that are totally supported by their parents and are using the loan money for travel, cars and all kinds of stuff.

Many people I know including my daughter received full reimbursement for their advance degrees from the company they worked for. One of my co-workers at Rockwell received his reimbursement check and took another job. Rockwell was going to give him a small increase and the other Company offered him a big increase.

Couple of days ago several of us were discussing ebay express and that we had opted into it. As those who opted in may have noticed it said it "may take up to 7 days to activate" - I've not noticed a big rush yet but it has not been 7 days either.

stamphick Ok, Swifty explained in simple words to me...there are two methods: the way that engineers are taught which is what they were taught in HS and then there is the way it is taught to business/liberal arts majors!! He can be so bad sometimes! BTW he was shocked to learn that the only thing that his brother and all the kids at the college would be qualified to do was to go on to more school! ;-) Anyway, he said you've got Newton and you've got Gottfried Leibniz, both of whom are are given credited for independently developing calculus. I'm not sure if Differential calculus or Integral calculus has anything to do whatsoever with what he was saying...but from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia...much if not all that you most likely already know
There is more than one rigorous approach to the foundation of calculus. The usual one is via the concept of limits defined on the continuum of real numbers. An alternative is nonstandard analysis, in which the real number system is augmented with infinitesimal and infinite numbers.
***snip***
Calculus started making great strides in Europe towards the end of the early modern period and into the first years of the eighteenth century. This was a time of major innovation in Europe, making accessible answers to old questions. Calculus provided a new method in mathematical physics. Several mathematicians contributed to this breakthrough, notably John Wallis and Isaac Barrow. James Gregory proved a special case of the second fundamental theorem of calculus in 1668. In Japan at around this time, Seki Kowa expanded further upon Eudoxus's method of exhaustion. Leibniz and Newton pulled these ideas together into a coherent whole and they are usually credited with the probably independent and nearly simultaneous "invention" of calculus. Newton was the first to apply calculus to general physics and Leibniz developed much of the notation used in calculus today; he often spent days determining appropriate symbols for concepts.
***snip***
Today, both Newton and Leibniz are given credit for independently developing calculus. It is Leibniz, however, who is credited with giving the new discipline the name it is known by today: "calculus".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calculus

I mentioned to Swifty that you had your masters in engineering by the time you were 20 and he said, "Now that is impressive. " He has been going on and on about some kid who recently graduated from the Univeristy of Richmond in one year plus one summer course. Seems the kids entered with 79 or 87 AP credits and then took 36 credits his first year plus a summer course and graduated with a degree. He just is not impressed with such a feat. Feels that first the kid went to a high school which was geared to kids coming out with over 70 AP credits and that the only reason the kid didn't go to Harvard or Yale or Stanford or MIT and got the degree from Virigina [which is nothing to sneeze at] is that the other schools wouldn't go along with giving him all those credits! Oh it was quite a ride room between him "deriding BAs" and liberal arts and then this kid...but always with a twinkle in his eye. He does love to get me going sometimes. BTW I emailed him The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman recommendation.

saereader hahaha on the mother. I wonder if her she ever got her old DD back after the experience of living with your DD!! BTW LLB did join two clubs so far. One is Gamers [no suprise there] and the other is the World Hunger group. LLB said that is what they look like too!

What Caused that Error Message?

what caused that error message?
i'm sure it wasn't me.
now there is another one -
and i didn't touch a key!
i bought a brand new program,
hope it didn't have a bug.
i think it's much more likely
it was caused by a mug.
the screen is black, the cursor's gone,
someone must have hid it.
aha, now it's back again -
but i don't know how i did it!
i'm sure that this computer
has a mind of its own,
so until i find an expert
better leave the thing alone!
well, now i'm on the internet,
i wish i had been told -
that all my little problems
would increase a thousand-fold!
i dialed up my home page,
just to have a look around
at anything of interest -
but the server can't be found.
finally it's working,
i access many sites,
got lots of information -
downloaded megabytes.
but how many bugs and cookies?
and they now know where i am,
so they'll use their planted spyware
to send me lots of spam.
i've had to quickly shut down,
'cos something froze the screen
and when i turned it on again
everything was green!
now having trouble starting up,
must be worse than it looks.
is it a virus or a worm?
oh well, back to reading books!

stamphick! Thomas Friedman is worth a read. I also catch him on some talking heads news programs. The World Is Flat is actually almost the same thesis as The Lexus and The Olive Tree, which I have read. And with world events as they are I highly recommend the revised edition of From Beruit to Jerusalem.

I was trying to remember why I don't have any roommate remembrances from when DD was an undergrad. Then I remembered. After freshman year she had a single room and by junior year she was in a "Quiet Building". She had roommate difficulties freshman year since her roommate was more social and there were often others in the room, forcing DD to use the library to study. DD later admitted that since she was an only child she didn't have good negotiating skills in areas of sharing etc.
Remember, it is not uncommon for people in theater to be shy and quiet --- until they are on stage or directing or whatever!

There was a dealer I recognized who got there before me and had a box of things picked out already, but at a glance there was only one thing in it I would have bothered with anyway. He looks for different stuff than I do apparently. Fun poking around there, and they did have a lot of stuf, altho most of it was glass, dishes, etc.
Got a laugh out of the messy dorm rooms-my sons were never very good about putting things away, but there rooms here at home never got all that bad either. But at college it was a different story-each spent two years in a dorm and then two years in an apartment with roommates. The dorm rooms were messy, but nothing like the apartments! Both are now very neat though, so something "clicked" sometime with them.

Lludwig- LOL re: the roommate. My DD is the biggest slob I have ever met. Really, it is just unbelievable how messy her room is. I like to pick my battles, so usually I just shut the door to it. This summer, when she boarded for a summer music program, she had a neat roommate from Europe. Within a week, the poor girl gave in to the mess, and the one time I visited, the floor was knee deep in sparkly T shirts, Pop Tart wrappers and music scores. They were exactly the same size (zero ha ha), so apparently every morning, they would just wake up and pick something off the floor and put it on, no matter who it belonged to. When I went to pick her up on the last day, the roommate's poor mother was standing in the middle of the mess muttering "Mon Dieu!" (My God).

stamphick Pilot program was the word I was looking for re: Philly. What the national and state associations said was that the bookeeping invovled in free-and-reduced meals costs more than what it would cost to give everyone a free meal. Plus it would counter the stigma that was involved for some children. You district would have to have a relatively high proportion of low-income students in order to be eligible for the universal free school breakfast/lunch program. Some people don't like the idea feeling that it is more important to make the middle class parents pay for the lunch than any savings that results from not having to do all the paperwork or eliminating the stigma of those who do qualify.

Does anybody have Emilia's email address? She hasn't been posting for a while, and I would like to get in touch with her. I know she had a different Ebay name recently, but darned if I can remember that either. Thanks.
